While writing my portion of our recently published Complete Google Penalty Recovery Kit from the Penguin and Panda updates, I ran across a lot of very useful information. I used many of these sites as resources in the guide but I didn’t have room for them all so I decided to put this one-stop-shop resource list together for everyone to benefit from. Take a look at the list in this post to find tools, resources, and insights into recovering your website traffic after a penalty.

Diagnosing your problem

  • Want to know when all the Panda updates occurred?  Check out this infographic of all the Panda updates.  Use this to correlate traffic drops on you site to the specific update rollouts.  Panda update infographic:  http://searchengineland.com/google-panda-update-112805
  • This is a great summary of the Google updates in 2013.  The post also includes information on the ‘keyword not provided’ update.
  • Brick Marketing continues to update this post with the latest updates of both Panda and Penguin.
  • Do you think an update is happening right now?  Check out Algoroo to see the turbulence in rankings.  When the bar is high…Google is updating.

  • Was it Penguin or Panda that affected your site?  Maybe it was both.  How to determine which update affected your site.
  • Many webmasters assume the penalty was caused by bad links.  It could be the case but often times the backlink portfolio has over optimized anchor text.  If you need to diffuse your anchor text, check out this site for a quick tool to give you some great ideas for variations.
  • You can also use EXCEL to help you identify over optimized anchor text.
  • Google Analytics – Check your traffic in Google Analytics to see if a drop in traffics correlates to a Panda or Penguin rollout date.  If this is a bit muddy and you can’t make a clear determination, then you can use one of the following tools:
  • Panguin – This tool will allow you to see how Google’s recent algorithm updates have impacted your traffic.  It’s easy to use but you must give the tool access to your Google Analytics account to get the data.
  • Fruition – This is another tool that will help you identify what update impacted your traffic. You can monitor 2 websites for free and you must also give access to your Google Analytics to get the data.
  • Start at the source and use Webmaster Tools. Many webmasters received the ‘unnatural’ links message in their Webmaster tools account.  This is the easiest way to confirm you have bad links in your profile. You can download a list of links from GWT.  Please note that this list is only a sample.  You’ll need other sources to compile a more complete list.

Backlink profile tools

  • Open Site Explorer – This is a great quality tool for finding backlinks and for general website analysis and SEO.  The site provides a number of tools to help you improve your rankings.  This is a subscription-based service.
  • Majestic SEO – Often referred to as the tool for finding the highest number of backlinks, Majestic also includes other tools to help with your Internet Marketing.  This is a subscription-based service.
  • Link Research Tools  – This site has a number of analysis tools along with their link research tools.  Their tool will rate your back links from healthy to toxic and give you incremental values in between.
  • Link Assistant – There is a free and paid version of this software.  You’ll need to download this to your computer.  It will help you find link partners and quality sites for back links.
  • Want a quick way to determine your anchor text ratios to see if you are over optimized for a particular keyword  or keyword phrase.  Try the Remoovem tool: http://www.removeem.com/ratios.php
  • Ahrefs.com – Use this site to do a quick analysis of your back link profile.  Just enter your URL and you’ll see a number of visuals that represent your back link profile.  The initial top line report is free but to use all their tools you’ll need to pay for their services.
  • Use Screaming Frog to check the status of link removals.  You’ve done the outreach asking for link removal now you want to see the results.  Read this walk through on how to use Screaming Frog to review your efforts.
  • So you’re on a limited budget and you’ve been penalized.  How about using only FREE tools to recover from Penguin.
