Article Marketing After the Panda Update

Article Writing

The first thing a lot of people probably think, thanks to the Google Farmer / Panda update is that article marketing has lost its value. Some of it has, if you solely depend on search traffic to bring visitors to your articles in hopes that they will continue to click through to your website.

But one thing that a lot of article marketers have missed is the community factor on some of these sites. Not all article directories are simply a repository of articles and nothing more. Some article networks have their own social community where members can interact through comments, forums, and question & answer areas. Members can also follow other members whose articles they like, and will be notified when that member has published a new article.

Getting to know you: Ardala Evans

Wednesday, September 15th, 2010

In this edition of our monthly interview series, I talk to Vertical Measures project manager Ardala Evans about her newfound love of the Internet marketing industry, her Guitar Hero prowess and hula hooping.

Michael Schwartz: What has attracted you to the Internet marketing field?

Ardala Evans: This field keeps you on your toes, not unlike a pair of ballerina shoes.  You must keep researching, experimenting and learning.  You can never stop and slow down; otherwise the internet world will pass you and your tutu by.

Michael: When you were first hired at Vertical Measures, it was to help edit articles. Now you manage the internship program and perform on-site SEO reviews and keyword research. Tell us about some of the most fascinating things you’ve learned at VM.

Ardala: The intricacies of what makes a great site successful.  I have truly enjoyed learning more and more about the hundreds of pieces of the SEO puzzle that, when put together correctly, create a terrific user experience and also help a site rank high in the search engines.  I then enjoy sharing what I’ve learned with clients.

Michael: Before your Vertical Measures career started, you worked a number of years at a career college. What did you do there and how did that work prepare you for your current career?

Ardala: I spent 10 years at the college; first working in academics.  We operated multiple campuses and I was in charge of checking the academic progression of the students and also made sure that they met all the qualifications to graduate from our program.  I then worked for several years in financial aid, and became the Director of Financial Aid for all of our campuses.  Compliance, audits and loan paperwork, oh my!  In other words, every “t” crossed and every “i” dotted.   Both of these positions required a keen attention to detail.  This skill is well used with Vertical Measures as I make sure that all content placed for our clients is high quality and editorially correct.

Michael: When you came first started working here you weren’t exactly tweeting like Ashton Kutcher. But I understand you’re developing a growing appreciation for Twitter. What do you like about the microblogging site, @AZArdie?

Ardala: I had set up my Twitter account just before starting to work at Vertical Measures.  You are correct; I didn’t get it at first.  It actually wasn’t until a friend introduced me to Hootsuite, and then, bam!  A little bird told me about things in France, the local food scene, SEO tips, whether Matt Cutts was bald this week, what my friends were up to, what other dog owners did when their dog……well you know.  People started posting pictures, so I joined in.  Then, wow, I started to get followers, which made me want to tweet more and follow more.  I really enjoy the little snippets of info on all the things I’m interested in.  It’s fun and it’s useful.  I have seen how Twitter can be used for businesses; nothing works better to spread the word.

Ardala Evans with her weighted hula hoop

Michael: A fun Ardala fact is that you are an avid jump roper. Tell us about your jump roping exploits.

Ardala: Ah, excuse me, you mean hula hooping, right?  Jump ropes are so yesterday (exasperated sigh)!  I’m not talking about the Wham-O hula hoops you buy in a toy store.  I use larger weighted hoops that are actually easier to use.   I crank up Don Omar, Ozomatli, Shakira, Kat DeLuna and Pitbull and let it rip.  Much more fun than the treadmill!

Michael: Like many people here at VM, you are a real lover of dogs (which you even display on your license plate!). Tell us about your animals and a little bit about your love for canines.

Ardala: I can’t imagine living without a dog.  When there isn’t a dog in the house, it feels strange to me.  When I was growing up, our family dog, a mutt named Jacob, slept on my bed, sat with me on the couch, ate my lima beans that I slipped him under the table, and was basically my best buddy.  Jake was still alive when I got married and moved out and sadly couldn’t take him with me.  When my son was born, his first word was not “Mommy” or “Daddy”, it was “Goggy” which he said very excitedly as he pointed at Jake.  Evidently this dog loving thing is genetic.  Like the Brady Bunch (work with me here), my life became the story of a lovely lady dog named Penny (Shetland Sheepdog) and two rambunctious boy dogs, Charlee and Elliot (American Eskimo Dogs).  What fun; chasing, barking, growling and howling.  I loved it!   But dogs age too quickly; they are not with us near long enough.  We now just have Elliot with us who is 15, and I cherish every day with him.  Our dogs have given me joy and the biggest laughs; my life has been better because of them.

Michael: You are a big fan of OK Go and these two videos in particular. What about this creativity appeals to you so much?

Ardala: These guys don’t care what other people think.  They do want they want and what they like.  They have a great appreciation for their fans, which they share through their awesome site and web presence.  Their videos all have that “home made” appeal which make them so fun to watch.  They are geeks in rockers clothing and they’re not afraid to let that shine through, or maybe it’s the other way around in the marching band video……  Anyway, I proudly display an autographed picture of them in the purple marching band uniforms above my desk here at Vertical Measures!

Michael: In the office we have heard rumors of your Guitar Hero prowess. What do you like so much about this game?

Ardala: Oh, office gossip….. I don’t know about prowess, but I do enjoy it.  Sometimes I play until my fingers bleed!  Well, until they’re numb anyway.  I think maybe I was a member of Metallica in another life.  I have a musical background and have tried to teach myself to play guitar, but it just never happened.  So Guitar Hero is the next best thing.  I live vicariously through a piece of plastic!  After a stressful day at Vertical Measures …… a Guitar Hero performance is just the thing.  There’s something so satisfying when you see “YOU ROCK” on the screen.

Michael: We here at Vertical Measures KNOW you’re a great baker because of all the little treats you bring in on occasion. What would you say is your favorite sweet to bake?

Ardala: I do like to bake.  It’s like your kitchen is a lab and you’re doing experiments.  You measure out all the ingredients, mix them together and heat them up.  My favorite experiment is the Graham Streusel Cake.  I’ve been making this cake for many years.  I wish I had kept a tally on the recipe card for each time I’ve made it.  It’s one of those desserts that is requested for every family get-together.

Michael: Many people think your name is Italian, but that’s not true. So tell us Ardala, how exactly did you get your name?

Ardala: From a comic book.  When my Dad was growing up he was a huge fan of the “Buck Rogers in the 25th Century” radio show and comic books.  Buck, of course, was the hero.  Killer Kane, with Ardala as his love interest and trusted sidekick, was Buck’s nemesis.  So, yes folks, I’m named after a villain.

Michael: As mentioned earlier, you run the internship program at VM. How have you seen this program grow since we launched it in January?

Ardala: Our internship program has grown by leaps and bounds.  Because colleges don’t provide classes to teach what we do, our program is such a unique learning experience.  From the webinars, workshops, Lunch and Learns, staff meetings, Vertical Measures library, completing assignments and AZIMA presentations, interns can get fully immersed in the internet marketing and link building experience.  Where we started with one intern, we have had as many as four and we recently saw our first intern become a full-time employee.  That was exciting!

Michael: And finally, what do you like so much about working at Vertical Measures?

Ardala: We are encouraged to follow and expand on our interests.  Everyone is always open to sharing his or her knowledge with each other.  We each have our strengths and specialties, and when we all come together we make one heck of a great team.  You know, kind of like on “Heroes.”

Content is Like a Box of Chocolates

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

Content is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re going to get. When you really wanted the nougat and instead ended up with the raspberry cream, did you look around to make sure no one was watching, spit it out and go for another one? You did, didn’t you? This is why content has to be taken seriously. If a visitor doesn’t like your content, they will quickly move on to another site that better suits their taste.

Box of ChocolatesFirst you must know who your users are. Then your number one goal, in regards to content, should be to gain your users trust. Your site needs to be their proverbial couch that they can lay down on, get comfortable, have their needs taken care of and receive guidance and advice.

In his book “101 Content Marketing Tips”, Byron White defines content as: “Anything included on a website that aims to attract and engage readers.  Content refers to text, pictures, videos, sound, animation, etc.” Content can actually be provided to visitors in three different ways:

1. Content on Your Website
You may think you have control over your site, but you don’t. Your users have their hand on the stick and they can either make you fly or send you into a nosedive. So keep them happy and engaged. Provide content that tells a story about how your products or services can solve their problems.

•           Keep the content short; paragraphs should be 3-5 sentences long.
•           The most important elements should be above the fold on the page.
•           Design the layout so the content can be skimmed quickly.
•           Use bullet points, bold type, highlights and italics.
•           Quality over quantity is key; content should be simple and easy to understand.

2. Content to Print and Take Away
During the content development process, be sure to consider downloadable documents that users can print from your site and take with them. A few ideas are: User Manuals, Instruction Guides, Check Lists, Product Tips, Resource Lists, and Best Practice Guides.

Imagine your User Manual sitting on someone’s kitchen counter, desk or coffee table. The only way it’s going to get there, instead of the recycle bin, is if it’s indeed helpful and entertaining. A dose of humor is a must if you want the manual to be perused and shared over and over.

3. Content Placed on Article Sites
Articles are a great way to take technical or complex subject matter and make it more comprehensible while at the same time being entertaining. Article Marketing is a great way to increase your credibility, which helps to meet your goal of gaining trust. A researched and well-written article that is placed on one of the popular articles sites, such as Ezine or Go Articles, can position you as an expert in your industry.

Clear and concise content on your website that is reviewed and updated on a regular basis is the answer to keeping your visitors satisfied and returning time and time again. The search engines may also reward you with great placement for your efforts. Remember, even if garbage content gets indexed, it may not pass through the filters that will get it ranked well in the search results. Just think of how great it will be when your visitors find that perfect nougat they’ve been longing for.

Do you have any other content ideas to share with our readers? Add them in the comments below.

Get Noticed

Tuesday, March 24th, 2009

Getting your website noticed is something that not only helps to create organic links, but gets more traffic to your site as well. Are you ready to ramp up your site and not only get it noticed but create brand recognition in your industry? Getting an article published can have a large impact on your brand.

Pretty much any industry can benefit from a well written article published on an online resource. Experts have always said that links from Library resource sites might just be the best links out there. While hard to get published on those sites, there are other places to get noticed and I’ve detailed some tips to getting noticed below. Best of all, most of the sites you end up finding to publish your article on are doing their own publicity, talking/e-mailing/IM’ing/commenting/tweeting about their new posts, and doing their own link building to your post: for free. If you have a blog and aren’t doing at least automated publicity, you really should–but that’s another subject for another post.
keyword research
Do your research: find blogs with increased page rank, high Technorati scores, high Alexa scores, and subscribers. Search your keywords and see which ones show up, compare the results. The more you research, the better your results. Google’s Blogsearch is helpful when looking for a place to get published. Think about the types of blogs your demographic would frequent. Think also about journals, .org sites in your industry, and tip websites in your industry.

Network: connect and correspond with blog writers, website owners, authors, industry professionals, through friends and family. Utilize sites like Twitter and their search function, Facebook, LinkedIn, and many other social networking sites. E-mail your contacts. Ask your connections to have a featured blog on their site, doesn’t hurt to ask just once right? Be willing to host a guest post as well on your own blog, and if not don’t get in the habit of asking others for favors, especially if they’re free.

article marketing serviceWrite: discuss a topic you have researched and are comfortable discussing. Determine whether or not you want your article to be witty, satirical, pessimistic, challenging, confrontational, informational, or a blend. The more practice you get at writing the better your articles will be. If you are struggling just remember: there is no harm in hiring a professional writer. After a few edits and revisions you are sure to come to an agreement on the outcome with the writer, but no doubt guidance will be needed as they are often not experts in every industry. Optimize your final draft with links to your site, utilizing separate keywords and URLs, and adding authority links.

Build links: utilize your social networks and friends to build links to your well written post, and publicize your piece after it’s been published.

Don’t forget to keep a list of all the contacts you build, and even after you have successfully published an article keep in contact with them. Check out the successes of one writer. You just might get published on CNN in the future too. The key thing to remember is: every little bit helps. Even if your first few tries are flops, don’t fret! There is always a professional offering advanced article marketing services….

25 Niche Article Directories

Monday, November 24th, 2008
niche article directoriesWe have a list of 25 new article sites focused on the automotive, education, home, health & B2B markets.

Article marketing and web site marketing in general, is a well established method of getting decent backlinks and it still works. Writing short 400 – 600 word informative and helpful articles is still very effective for getting targeted traffic and backlinks. We’ve been touting the value of good article marketing for a while now.

The sites we have collected cater to specific topics like Education, Health, Residential Services, Automotive or Business to Business. We like these sites because they are targeted, providing more value to the reader.   They also allow links in the body of the article not just the bio box.

Some of these sites are relatively new, so they have little or no page rank. But they are probably worth trying as we have seen time and time again that these types of vertically focused sites seem to pass on solid link juice. Besides, patience is a virtue when it comes to link building. Eventually these sites should accumulate decent PR.

On the majority of these sites we found there are some editorial criteria that you need to meet in order for it to be accepted. This includes submitting unique articles not found on other sites, a good summary, keyword tags and a strong title, but if you meet those, you can get in a few great links from the body of the article to your website, which is a great opportunity.

We are not going to post all 25 sites here, but if you’d like a complete list of any of the vertical market article sites, click your area of interest below and we’ll be glad to email the sites to you directly:
