I too do work for a local institute of higher education (law school). My primary focus is to generate engagement and interest in the school by prospects and their parents, as well as current students. We use Facebook/Twitter/other as a way to extend the brand beyond what their limited marketing budget will allow. I highly recommend to others to think outside the traditional media box and be flexible and creative with your approach to Social Media. There's a lot more wiggle room in SoMe than other marketing. Try something. If it doesn't work, modify or try something else. Economically speaking the freedom is huge!
