I think we need to be moving our niche site activities to areas of the Internet that are "true to the niche." Turn of the Pagerank tool in your head and stick to the niche. A link from a pagerank 4 page that is off topic is less valuable that an PR1 link from a perfectly related page. Am I wrong? I agree with the jist of this discussion.
