Hi, this is Mike Huber from Vertical Measures, and today we are going to talk about five different link building techniques. Now link building has been around for a really long time. It’s one of the cornerstones of SEO strategies. The five link building techniques that I’m going to talk about today are really very effective. If you look at them in whole, they are a little bit nuanced, but the techniques in and of themselves create different results.
So let me talk a little bit first about what you should do prior to any link building activities. One of the things you really want to do, based on the most recent Google updates, is to take a close look at your backlink portfolio. You want to look at the types of sites that are pointing to you, and you also want to look at the quality of the links from those websites that are pointing to you.
Now, I’ve recently done a number of backlink analyses for a number of different clients, and it really runs the gamut between really, really good backlink portfolios and really spammy portfolios. For example, one of the backlink analyses that I did has a lot of links that are pointing to our client site from local business and affinity groups. These are really good natural links, and you can tell that they were built naturally over time. Contrast that to another client that I looked at, it was full of spammy links, foreign language sites, a lot of spun content, and English as a second language websites.
So you really want to dig into your backlink portfolio to see what kind of websites are pointing to you. Along with that, you also want to look at the anchor text of those sites that are pointing to you. With some of the recent updates, over-optimization of anchor text could be a problem. You also want to look at the number of websites that have multiple pages of links pointing to your website. One of the techniques that I’ll talk about actually addresses that issue.
Now let’s get into the actual five link building techniques. The first one is creating great content. That’s actually the very best way to create links for your website because what that will do is attract natural links. Although it’s one of the best ways to build links, it’s also one of the techniques that takes the longest. But over time, it’s actually one of the most effective, both in terms of the quality of links and in terms of the actual cost per link.
Another technique that we use and we find it really very effective is called targeted link requests. What we do is we find relevant websites that have content that’s related to our client or client services, and we contact those webmasters and we either provide them with a really nice infographic or social media graphic or really good content, because what that does is help that webmaster to actually have more great content on their website, and it actually increases their traffic and their readership. We’ve had a lot of success with that.
The next technique we call link pruning. As I mentioned in the backlink portfolio, you may have websites that point to you and you’ve overused your anchor text, or you may have websites that are pointing to you that are really spammy. When you do the link pruning, in some cases you may ask the webmaster to take your link off of their website, or you may ask them to change the anchor text of that link so it actually reduces the ratio of your over-optimized anchor text.
Another technique that we use is called link acquisition. What we do is we find websites that mention our client or mention our client’s services and we contact the webmasters and ask them to link those words or phrases to our client website. What this provides for that webmaster is a way that their readers or users can actually get more information about the topics that they’re reading about and really kind of expand on the things that they’re most interested in.
Another technique that we use is called link reclamation. This is effective for sites that have been around some time and maybe they have pages that have thin content on them now or it’s old content, or maybe they even have pages that are broken or they don’t exist any longer. What we do is we find links on other websites that are pointing to our client site on those broken pages or those bad pages, and what we do is we request to that webmaster that they actually take the link and change it to either the home page of our client website or to a new landing page, new content that’s been developed. What that does is it actually reactivates or revitalizes a link that exists, but actually now it points to a really good website.
So those are the five link building techniques that we use on a regular basis, and we find those very effective. Those are just five. There are many, many other techniques that you can use to build links to your website. What you want to do is you want to focus on sites that provide good signals to the search engines, and you want to focus on websites that are good quality that will actually help you in your rankings.
