Mortgage Link Building - DoFollow Tuesdays
Every Tuesday we pick a vertical market based on the number of votes a market receives at our Vertical Market Poll. This week it is the Mortgage & Finance market. We invite all of you out there to post (in the comments) a specific link building recommendation for the mortgage market (a good directory, authority website, blog, link search, etc.). If it adds value, we will approve it, give you the credit and a “dofollow” link to your site. However, we will just delete stupid, irrelevant, spammy comments – only truly useful information will be allowed.
Our recommendations this week center around blogs. There are really two different links that you can get from other blogs; 1) links from comments, 2) links from the actual posts.
Blog Commenting - we strongly recommend that you become active with several blogs related to the mortgage and finance industry. In particular, blogs related to your niche. If you specialize in FHA loans, then find posts about FHA loans and comment. Be sure to add real value in you comment. If you feel like being aggressive, try using your important keyword phrases as your anchor text in your "name" or in the comment itself. Some bloggers are okay with that, some don’t like it. It’s up to you on how you proceed. To find relevant blogs and posts, try using the advanced search feature on Technorati. Here is an example for "FHA Loans". Like all link building that is worthwhile, this takes some time, effort and commitment.
Blog Posts - contextual links in the actual blog post are some of the most powerful links you can get. But how do you get a blogger to write about you and link to you using your anchor text? Well aside from paying the blogger, a practice frowned on by Google, you might offer to write a guest post. Using the technique mentioned above to find related blogs, you might write to the blog owner asking if you can place a "guest post" on their site. Believe me, most bloggers are happy to have someone else provide a guest post for them as long as it is professional and not a sales pitch about any one product or service. Here is a sample email you might try:
Hi Arnie,
I recently started writing work for mortgage & finance sites as a content writer. I would like to write a guest post related to mortgages or finance on your site if you’re interested in accepting such a post. If you are interested, please let me know and I can send you an article for you to look over.I will write a good, useful post on any topic specifically for your blog, free of cost. But I will need a by-line to build up my writing portfolio. In addition, there will be a link to my site (www.mysite.com) in the by-line or text. So, it will help all parties concerned.
Please note: I can write any topic that suits the audience of your blog.
Some sample posts written by me:

All the above articles were widely read and received numerous links from other bloggers.

Vic

A great way to build links is to create a wordpress theme centered around mortgage or real estate and submit it to wordpress and other free theme directories. Of course you are going to want to add a link back to your site in the footer of the WP theme! Encourage any agents that work for you or that you know of to setup a blog using your custom mortgage WP theme too. If you really want to build a ton of links add some great custom widgets like a mortgage calculator or links to good mortgage resources to the theme.
But make sure the theme actually works - widgets and all. Most of those sponsored themes are cheap and undergo very little testing.
Get involved with your niche community. Offer good content and make relevant posts. Respond and comment on relevant topics and questions within the community. Tip: Search “your niche keyword + forum.”
Start with your local chamber of commerce and other local business internet sites. Write an article or two about today’s mortgage market opportunities or pitfalls and submit them to a few article directories. Yahoo answers if handled “delicately” is a great place to pick up links in this market as there are hundreds of questions every week from people seeking help with their mortgage questions.
Commenting on the current mortgages / credit crunch is a great method. Because of the current climate it is very topical / newsworthy - hence much more likely to work now than a year ago.
The current Freddie Mac goings on are a minefield of opportunities!
Free pres release sites offer interesting opportunities for linking. A significant number are dofollow and even allow a href entries in responses!
Definitely get involved in the community. Become an active participant in forums and blogs on the subject. Find experts in the field to write well informed articles on the subject that people would actually want to link to. Embed your links within the article and submit it to various social bookmarking sites throughout the web.
With mortgages being such a hot button issue and so well covered in the media, now is a great time to be involved in mortgage link building.
Linkbuilding, or link buidding Tis the process of creating backlinks, or inbound links to your website.
This can be done several different ways. Many popular linkbuilding tactics are searching for and receiving reciprocal links, being listed in e-zines, newsletters, directories, search engines, etc.
Overall, this is a laborious process for new website owners. Some website opwner don’t care about having a pure linkbuilding strategy, they simply want a lot of links for allkinds of site.
They think that more links are better than less links.
When it comes to linkbuilding using irrelevant-themed links, more is LESS. This can hurt your standings with the search engine. Link building can be an automated process for some people but if you don’t know what you’re doing it can be hazardous to your webswite’s health.
It doesn’t take long to bring yourself up to speed on proper linkbuilding. But for most website owners, this isn’t something they have time to do. A website I own has a low page rank and gets minimal traffic. The links page was built using the reciprocal linkbuilding method.
In my opinion though, reciprocal linking is a bunch of unimportant sites trying to link to other unimportant sites. If they were important sites, they wouldn’t need to search for and exchange links with your low-PR site.
In the long run,an automated, reciprocal link buliding system pays off. But it has to be done correctly or the long-terms effects of improper linkbuilding will backfire on your website’s standing for certain keywords, and it will take even longer to reverse the damage.
In any case the quality of posting should not be taken lightly. A poor comment may still bring you a backlink. However it has anegative impact on branding. I am a supporter of do follow blogs but strongly believe that any participation should add value to the post in some way. It is a two way approach not just one way.
I suggest checking adding free mortgage calculators to our site. These add lots of value to your visitors and make them more likely to comeback.
Another suggestion to get more backlinks is to paid someone to create a simple mortgage calculator and you can give it away with an embedded linkback to your site. Its very powerful!
Link building can be an automated process for some people but if you don't know what you're doing it can be hazardous to your webswite's health.
