The quality of the search results in google depends heavily on links and buying links result obviously in worse search result. These site can only detected by humans. So i think don’t buy links for the long term, it may help you to boost an new site, but for the long term stay on right site of the lane.. ;-)

That is how people are truly voting for a site.

But I agree, Google is mostly concerned about the bottom line (happens when you go public) and are not highly motivated to implement any drastic changes.
