		<description><![CDATA[I think where the discounting tactic crosses the line is if it&#039;s an explicit quid-pro-quo (link or don&#039;t get the discount).  Overstock was greedy imho... instead of just demanding 1 link, they required multiple links with unnaturally perfect anchor text.  That&#039;s where Google brought down the hammer- the whole thing was obviously manipulative.

An example of another site doing this the &quot;right&quot; way is Amazon-- they&#039;re offering PRIME for free  to anyone with a .edu email address.  While I&#039;m sure they&#039;ve been promoting this program to  colleges, it&#039;s free and open to *anyone* with a .edu email address, so there&#039;s no quid-pro-quo.  And  I&#039;m sure Amazon is getting A LOT of great dofollow .edu links from the program, and they&#039;re clearly not manipulative like Overstock&#039;s were.]]></description>
