Home Improvement Links – DoFollow Tuesdays

August 5th, 2008 • By: Vertical Measures  • Directories, Do Follow Tuesdays, Local

DoFollow TagsEvery Tuesday we pick a vertical market based on the number of votes a market receives at our Vertical Market Poll. This week it is the Home Improvement market.  By this we mean home improvement as it relates to remodeling services, roofing, etc.  Not retail outlets.   We invite all of you out there to post (in the comments) a specific link building recommendation for the home improvement market (a good directory, authority website, blog, link search, etc.). If it adds value, we will approve it, give you the credit and a “dofollow” link to your site. However, we will just delete stupid, irrelevant, spammy comments – only truly useful information will be allowed.

This week’s suggestion from our staff is all about local.  Since this industry is just about 100% local, we think it is critical for you to appear in local search results

For example, when conducting a Google search for ‘phoenix home remodeling’, you get this result.   Notice the local search results dominate the top of the page.  If we were consulting with Republic West, we would recommend they work on their Google local listing as they are completely missing from there, and since they rank 7th in the natural results, they are now pushed below the fold on the screen.  One trick to getting listed higher in the Google local results is to get several positive customer reviews.

Other places to be listed for local search results include Yahoo, MSN/Live, DirectoryM and MerchantCircle.  Many local listings are free, so there is no excuse not to create them for all of your physical locations.  Once you do, get some customers to add reviews and maybe even point some links to your local page.  It all helps!

These tend to be fee based, but you should also check into being listed in the more traditional sites like the Yellow Pages: YellowBook.com, YellowPages.com, DexKnows, and Superpages.

Now let’s hear from the rest of you. Place your advice for link building for the home improvement market in the comments below. Those that are accepted will get a nice "dofollow" link from us.

Make sure you sign up for our email or RSS feed so that you are alerted every time a new niche market is covered. Even if we are not focusing on your niche, you just might see a pretty creative idea that will trigger an thought for your market.

Please be sure to vote for your market today!  VOTE HERE

  • Denver Roof Replacement
With our home improvement clients; plumbers, roofers, painters etc we always try and have a blog or two and write articles industry specific. This way we are in control of the links we create and can provide useful information for prospective customers.
  • I've been reading the information on your site for quite some time now, just wanted to do a quick post and say thank you for all of the useful information you have been providing your readers all this time.
  • Very informative article. I've found your blog via Google and I'm really happy about the information you provide in your posts. Btw your sites layout is really messed up on the Chrome browser. Would be cool if you could fix that. Anyhow keep up the good work!
  • Options Furniture offers contemporary bespoke fitted furniture to fulfil all your furniture requirements. Every piece of furniture is custom made. • I just learned about having a blog in addition to your website so you link to the site from the blog, and then, decide on a keword or phrase and every time you post on the blog be sure to incorporate that keyword/phrase into each post. Then highlight it and make it a link to your site. Some feel making it bold increases the link quality. I dont know. If your keyword is Area Rugs as mine is, then that word would be incorporated into every post and highlighted and made into a link to your home page. Anchor text within your own site counts a great deal as backlinks also. So dont forget to build your own infrastructure. On each post be sure to link to another post as well.
  • www.MyHammer.co.uk is a great website for finding tradesmen or handymen for almost any job. You post your job on the site and then wait for quotes. You can then pick the best quote based on price and/or the tradesman's rating (tradesmen are rated by previous customers).
  • Theres a couple of things you can do here. When i advertising Click 4 Beds, i look through our suppliers and ask them for links, use google blog search and search for new bed news and releant bed related blog topics and build relationships with other interior design and decoration blogs and find great ideas for posts of my own, use google trends to find bed related topics in my area (i.e. sleep) and write about them, use google filters to find local sites where i can contribute to the community and add links to local directories (village trusts are brilliant for this) also dont forget local PR, sponsorship and competitions with local schools and colleges etc all are great at helping promote yourself online with juicy links.
  • I would advise sending polite emails to other blog users in the home improvement/DIy niche. I find it is generally a more effective way of getting a decent thematic link.
  • Home improvement is a tough niche to build website strength in. Just keep writing useful content..

I agree with some comments, we are a new DIY website and we are looking to do a exchange with well written blogs.
  • I would recommend always analyzing the competition's backlinks in Yahoo to see where they are getting links from, which will help in your link building efforts. Also, you can contact bloggers in the home improvement niche and ask for a link or to syndicate content there depending on what type of content they need. Also, submitting articles on your area of expertise to Ezinearticles.com and other article directories is very effective.
  • I would advise sending polite emails to other blog users in the home improvement/DIy niche. I find it is generally a more effective way of getting a decent thematic link.

    Thanks
  • Kind of reluctant to throw this one out there, but here goes.

Get into the DoItYourself.com Showcases and Links directory. Fairly easy to do. Directory is a PR5 with PR3 sub-directories beneath it.

I actually use this directory for a client and it actually delivers traffic from it -- albeit not huge traffic. But traffic none-the-less.

The other thing they got going is the DoItYourself.com Community Forums which boasts over 166,000 members. Become an expert in your field on this forum, or at least, become an active poster and enjoy your signature links that come with it.

There are a several other DIY home improvement sites similar to this out there, but this site really delivers true high quality linkbacks.
  • I've had some success in getting a few free links in exchange for testing a page and then providing feedback on the errors found along with some suggested fixes. Made a few new friends that way as well -
  • Some often overlooked linking sources for home improvements are local real estate brokers, local hardware stores and of course local banks. Creating some content for these types of sites in exchange for a link should be a fairly straight forward endeavor.
  • Cusomer reviews help immensely. You should add Angies List to your recommondations.
  • I use a great utility that finds dofollow blogs based on keywords you enter. I just started it and entered 'sinks' and about 8 dofollow blogs came up. try it, its called 'fastblogfinder' search it on google.
  • This has little to do with SEO but let me recommend using Craigslist to market local services.

It is easy and free to set up. My friend lost his plumbers job and now uses Craigslist to pull his own plumbing jobs and makes more than he made working for someone else. Not to mention more time off.

You do not even need an online presence to do this, the leads call you and then you have a one to one relationship.

Forget YellowPages on paper book printed listings, they just go in the trash when they are delivered. Another thing by the wayside in the age of the PC.
  • Here are some general sites. publish articles at work.com. don't forget knol.google with its latest hot ranking juice.

Then try to seek out targeted home improvment sites. If you do furnace or hvac work. Hit up www.FurnanceCompare.com that gives you a free listing for your small business. Which is nice little link to get for the site could already be ranking for your geo targeted keyword phrase on this high ranking site for this one niche.
  • regarding knol, I think Google already claim that they are not giving some sort of "special treatment" for Knols and I doubt it if it really gives a really "hot" link juice. It's just my opinion, but of course a link is still a back link.
