Every Tuesday we pick a vertical market based on the number of votes a market receives at our Vertical Market Poll. This week it is the Law Firm market. We invite all of you out there to post (in the comments) a specific link building recommendation for the legal market (a good directory, authority website, blog, link search, etc.). If it adds value, we will approve it, give you the credit and a “dofollow” link to your site. However, we will just delete stupid, irrelevant, spammy comments – only truly useful information will be allowed.
There was a great post by Rishi on SEOmoz.org this week that gave us the idea for our recommendations below. In fact, we are just going to grab some of his suggestions (to see them all visit his post), and give examples below.
Look for links from professional affiliations:
What business groups do you belong to? [example: AZIPA]
Who do you refer business to? [example: Notary Bids]
Do you know your regular clients or customers? [example: Fennemore Craig Client List]
Who provides complementary services to you? [example: Your CPA Firm]
Look for links from your personal network:
Do any of your relatives and friends run businesses? [example: Start Young Play Strong]
What professional groups do you belong to? [example: State Bar of Arizona]
What local businesses do you have more than casual acquaintances with? [example: A Phoenix Law Firm Has Friends Here]
Do you belong to any community projects or do any charity work? [example: Arizona Cancer Charities]
Do you have a web profile anywhere? [example: Like a LinkedIn Profile]
OK – there are some really nice opportunities for law firms. Now lets hear from the rest of you. Place your advice for link building for the law firm market in the comments below. Those that are accepted will get a nice "dofollow" link from us.
Make sure you sign up for our email or RSS feed so that you are alerted every time a new niche market is covered. Even if we are not focusing on your niche, you just might see a pretty creative idea that will trigger an thought for your market.

Google maps is a solid place for law firms to build a link along with all local groups ie Chamber of Commerce. Also many law firms preform pro-bono work for various local groups like the Boy Scouts, YMCA, churches etc so you may want to ask for links from these sites where appropriate. Another good source maybe your law school alumni website, you may even be able to pick up a link from an .edu that way.

Many law firm websites are managed by companies who have made other law firm sites, if you can find one of these firms than you will have the opportunity for several reciprocal links.

Classifieds1000.com is usually a pretty easy place to get links for B2B applications. They have an emerging lawyers directory, here’s the CA example: http://directory.classifieds1000.com/california/lawyer
Some states have no listings which is great — less competition for link juice.
Also, let’s not forget DMOZ — a tough link to get if you can’t be patient… but well worth it.

Local libraries are good for handing out links if you have a local niche blog or site, as long as your site is totally legit and useful to readers. Another link source is from college students who can get you edu links. Gotta love those! Actually, if you know a few college students you can make out like a bandit. You can hire them to write articles for pennies on the dollar AND get a couple of sweet edu’s.

Find other legal bloggers in your area of practice, and offer to write them a good, substantive, ORIGINAL (don't just copy one of your own) post that would be of interest to their readers. Not only do you get a backlink, you also get goodwill from the blogger, and may attract a few readers to check out the rest of your articles. This works especially well if you disagree with one of the things a blogger has written about. A well-researched and informative disagreement makes for a more informative read, and is much more likely to attract readers' attention.

Being a lawyer myself, I know that law firms don’t know very much about SEO and off-page link-building. Individual lawyers can try article marketing and at least get some high-PR links to their firm bio pages. Also, a good, strong effort at optimizing one’s law firm page for the search engines helps because it makes the site visible. My last firm never did that.
Also, a lot of firms have blogs. They should tailor those blog posts to specific keywords and make the individual posts more visible.
Other efforts can be made for obtaining relevant, do-follow, high-PR links from law/legal-related websites. There are lot of sites like that that come up on Google.

Hey brilliant, this has been a brilliant help to me, I have had some really strange trouble in my personal life recently and it is funny how certain things can really pick you back up or make you look differently on the horrible things and get busy with the other things in life. Anyway thank you a lot.

Here’s a few great ways for lawyers to get links. It’s actually on our whitepaper which will be on our site live, so consider this a sneak peak preview:
1. If you’re a member of a Bar Association, many of them have member directories. Those directories will give you a link to your law firm website that is “dofollow”. What’s more is you’d be surprised how many of your competitors are featured in that same directory and do not have their website link there. Chances are you don’t either, so go and do that right now!
2. Many law school alumni member directories are actually closed to the public and require logins to view, so it doesn’t help to get a link since Google bots can’t find it. Instead, ask to go lecture at your local college or law school and get a link from the online posted syllabus. Or if you’re hiring, make sure to go to the career fairs and ask for the link on the page that highlights the employers who will be attending.
There’s actually 7 really good ways lawyers can get links on their own and they’re in the whitepaper we put together. Make sure to check out http://www.legalcommunicationsgroup.com in the coming weeks to find it.
Thanks guys! Best of luck!

I would strongly recommend blogging on your area of practice, but be sure to write interesting, thought provoking articles that others will actually take the time to read. You can also submit these blog articles to online article submission sites. You will see an increase in traffic, etc. over time if you write something worthwhile. You might actually learn something yourself in the process.
